Living for the Second Time – Organ Donation

While reading an article about Organ Donation, I realized that I have known that it always existed, however, even though it has a very significant impact on people’s lives, it has appeared to have a lack of awareness. So today, I decided to write about Organ Donation to spread the awareness! I hope you will let others know about this too!

Organ Donation is an act of donating healthy organs and tissues from one person for transplantation into another human being. Organs you can donate include:

  • Internal organs: Kidneys, heart, liver, pancreas, intestines, lungs
  • Skin
  • Bone and bone marrow
  • Cornea

You can be either alive or dead for the donation. Most organ and tissue donations occur after the donor has died. But some organs and tissues can be donated while the donor is alive (eg: kidney).

Experts say that the organs from one donor can save or help as many as 50 people. The best part about this is that you can donate organs EVEN AFTER YOUR DEATH! Yes, you read that right! After you die, your tissues – such as bone, skin, heart valves and corneas – can be donated within the first 24 hours of death. However, for this, you need to register yourself while you are still alive.

22 people die each day waiting for an organ to be donated. Lack of awareness is responsible for 4000-5000 people waiting for a transplant, and I feel we should make this awareness active and start encouraging people.

I see this as an exciting idea that A PART OF YOU WILL STILL BE LIVING EVEN AFTER YOU DIE! Statistics don’t interest me and words can’t do justice to such a sensitive topic. It would mean the world to the patient and their family that my death would bring a positive impact on their lives. Their happiness would make my death not only a bliss but also a meaningful one.

  1. Great blog and very informative. I have a friend who’s daughter was born with heart and lung problems. Due to a selfless grandmother who’s daughter and grandson were killed in an accident, the baby is a growing little girl, and a delight to everyone who knows her

  2. As a health professional I am SO grateful you posted this! Some people do not realize they have this option or really understand home important organ donation is. Just last week after a discussion with a friend they updated their status to organ donor 🙂 Your post is beautiful and I am sure you will do the same and help others have a second chance as well. xoKitty

  3. This is an important post. I signed up to be an organ donor a few years ago, and it’s one of the best decisions I have ever made. As humans, if we cannot help our fellow beings, what’s the point of this life!

  5. Thanks for bringing more awareness to a sensitive subject. My grandfather had a heart transplant that would’ve out lasted him! His heart was still doing wonderful when he passed- but his kidneys not so much. At the time of the transplant, the doctor said we could maybe get 10, 12 years if we are lucky. 15 years later and his heart was still doing great. We are forever grateful for the heart donor. He passed in a motorcycle accident, may he rest in peace.

  6. I’m an organ donor and it was the easiest decision I’ve ever made. Wish more people were more thoughtful about how much good they can do after they pass. Thanks for bringing awareness.

  7. very informative. We need more people to be aware and donate their organs. Most people including myself are aware of organ donation but never really take a step to register. Where I come from, organ donation is not well organised as they still have to use funds to deal with basic illnesses like Malaria, dengue fever, Aids etc. However, eye donation is a project handled by the Lions Club.

  8. This was beautifully written Rashi and so inspiring to read from such a young girl like yourself. We appreciate your time in raising awareness of organ donation and hope you motivate others to register their donor decision. More importantly, we hope your readers are encouraged to discuss organ donation and their donor decision with their loved ones, after all, it is the consent of family that allows for donation procurers to go ahead.
